CDL/DOT Medical Exam

 

If you’re a commercial driver such as (a truck or bus driver) you are required to complete a CDL/DOT Physical examination. Under federal law the Department of Transportation (DOT) requires that all drivers complete a regular physical examination. The exam will determine that you can safely operate a vehicle and includes the following:

  • Blood pressure and Pulse
  • Vision test, drivers are required to have at least 20/40 acuity in each eye. You must also be able to recognize and distinguish standard traffic light colors
  • Ears and listening ability to perceive a “forced whisper” from at least 5 feet away
  • Any physical or spinal deformities
  • Mouth or throat problems breathing or swallowing
  • Neurological and reflexes exams
  • Listen to your heart and lungs for murmurs and impaired respiratory functions
  • Conduct urinalysis for indications of underlying medical conditions
  • Muscle disease or weakness
  • Any past or current injuries and illness, especially those involving the head and brain

Being a commercial driver requires long hours on the road and can be physically demanding. For that reason its important to perform these regular examinations. Some factors that can potentially disqualify you from passing this exam includes

  • History of epilepsy
  • Poor vision and hearing
  • Diabetes
  • The use of some medications
  • History of alcoholism
  • The use of any illegal narcotic will
    automatically disqualify you
